Frame by Frame: Thank You for Celebrating With Us

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the unveiling of Frame by Frame last month! It was wonderful to see people exploring the photographs, recognizing familiar places and sharing their own Amarillo memories. We’ve included a few photos from the celebration below.

The permanent collection grew out of the Amarillo Building’s 100th anniversary and an invitation to the community to share photographs from family albums, personal collections and archives. From historic street scenes and local businesses to schools, sports, and everyday life, the 100 selected images show how Amarillo has grown and changed across generations. We’re grateful to everyone who contributed a photograph or a story.

“This started as a way to celebrate the building’s 100th anniversary, but it became something much bigger,” said Ginger Nelson, co-owner of the Amarillo Building. “It became a celebration of Amarillo.”

The collection has found a fitting home here. When the Amarillo Building opened in 1925, it was the city’s first skyscraper. For the past century, people have built businesses and careers within its walls while Amarillo grew around it.

We hope you’ll encourage your family and friends to stop by the Amarillo Building and take a look. You might recognize a place you remember or discover a piece of Amarillo history you’ve never seen before.

More Fun Is Coming in October!

The celebration doesn’t stop with Frame by Frame. Our friends at the Coalition of Health are planning a Trunk or Treat in the Amarillo Building’s underground parking garage on Saturday, October 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and we’d love for our building community to help make it a fun day for local children. We’re collecting individually wrapped Halloween candy through Friday, October 9. Drop off a bag, big or small, in the collection box in the basement by the mailbox. Interested in setting up a booth? Email DeDe at dede.martinez@cohs.net for details.

And keep your creativity ready: our annual pumpkin decorating contest returns October 29! We’ll share more details as the date gets closer. It’s shaping up to be a fun month at the Amarillo Building!

Jazz Is Back on Polk Street

There’s another reason to spend an October evening downtown: Jazztober returns for its 14th year! Every Tuesday in October, the lawn of the Historic Bivins Mansion at 1000 S. Polk Street will host free live music from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

This year’s lineup includes Sean Vokes & Friends on October 6, The Martinis on October 13, Austin Brazille on October 20, and Big G & The Tradewinds on October 27. Bring a chair or blanket, grab some dinner and enjoy an evening of music just down the street from the Amarillo Building.

October Sounds Good Downtown

Our neighbors at the Amarillo Symphony have a full month of music planned. Whether you’d like an afternoon chamber concert, a lunchtime look behind the music, or a night with the full orchestra, there’s something to put on your calendar.

  • Echoes and Landscapes brings Chamber Music Amarillo to The Loft at First Baptist Church on Saturday, October 10, at 2 p.m.

  • Lunch & Listening: Made in America offers a preview of the upcoming concert with Music Director George Jackson and guest artists on Friday, October 23, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Globe-News Center. Tickets are $15 and include a boxed lunch.

  • Made in America: Celebrate 250! features American composers, a new trumpet concerto and Copland’s Symphony No. 3 at the Globe-News Center on October 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m.

We love having the Symphony here in the Amarillo Building, and we hope you’ll get out and enjoy some live music this month!

As always, thank you for being part of the Amarillo Building community. We have a few spaces available, so if you know someone looking for an office, please let Misty know. We hope you have a great October and enjoy the change of seasons!
